Tiny Prints helps plan baby showers

My nephew and his wife recently announced they are expecting their first baby. We are all very happy for them. Now, it's time to start planning for the arrival of the little one, and what better way than to plan a baby shower.

I remember planning my daughter's last baby shower. It was so exciting, because it would be my first granddaughter. That meant pink, ribbons and bows for the first time. But, I wasn't sure what to do or how to put it together, so number one, I did a lot of planning to make it unique. And, ask for help if you need it.

Number two, the location is very important before making too many plans. I chose her home with the help of her husband, who made sure she would not be home while we set up and decorated. We decided to make it a surprise party.

Then of course what's a shower without guests? Number three, make a list of the friends and family of the parents-to-be if it's a co-parent shower.

Number four, Tiny Prints baby shower invitations offer many designs. It can help you not only prepare for the party, but help with a theme. Look at the designs and find what you like and it will help you decorate. For us, a girl meant princess, and she still is.

Number five, personalize. I learned how to make a pretty diaper cake and many other crafty items I had never made before by getting directions online. Since it was important to me to include daddy and the brothers, I made the boys a big brother shirt and daddy a "Diaper duty apron". Just look at several baby shower sites, it's not all hard. Many things are simple to make and fun.

Number six, purchase what you need like I did. I bought shower party favors from Walmart. I also bought meat, cheese and fruit trays from Sam's, along with crackers, rolls and dips, so I didn't have to cook. You don't want to be too tired to enjoy the party.

Number seven, do something unexpected like I did. A fountain of pink chocolate helped make the party a splash.

Number eight, know your parents and what they're comfortable with. We kept games simple so there was no embarrassing moments.

Number nine, have a designated person to write down what each person gives the parents-to-be so it can be recorded in the baby book. The parents would also like to thank everyone for the wonderful gifts they receive.

Number ten, take a lot of pictures. When it's over, the parents will want to remember the event. They will thank you for recording it.

Have fun. You have helped make memories for the parents and new little one to be.

Eggs recalled because of health risk

Dates and codes are stamped on the end of the egg carton or printed on the case label. However, not all affected brands will be printed in the same order. Typically, the plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. In most cases the Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1720 223. If your carton has a combination of numbers that matches the affected plant number AND Julian date, your eggs are affected in the recall. Using the example above, P-1720 223 may appear on some cartons as 223 #1720, 1720 223 or other variations. It is important to note that both the plant number and Julian date must match. If the Julian date does not match the affected plant number than your eggs are not involved in the recall.

Kids eat free at IHOP in August

IHOP offers hungry families help while shopping for back to school supplies. Every day in August, IHOP invites families to take part in its Kids Eat Free promotion from 4 to 10 p.m.

Available for a limited time at participating locations, IHOP's Kids Eat Free promotion runs every day through August 31. Families who dine at IHOP from 4 to 10 p.m. daily will receive one free kid's meal with each adult entrée purchase.

The free meal is valid for kids 12 and under on IHOP's "Just for Kids" menu items (drinks are not included unless otherwise specified on the "Just for Kids" menu). The offer is available dine-in only and is not valid with any other discounts, coupons or specials.

The IHOP "Just for Kids" menu features a variety of kid-friendly options, including: Cheeseburgers, Crispy Chicken Strips, Grilled Cheese, and IHOP's famous Funny Face and Silver Dollar Pancakes. All IHOP "Just for Kids" lunch and dinner items are served with fresh fruit.

Pet food is making our kids sick

Dry dog and cat foods have been linked to human illness reports the online medical journal Pediatrics, after conducting a study for a 3-year period. The investigation found human Salmonella, especially in young children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigated a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections in humans in 2007. They identified Salmonella bacteria in several brands of dry dog and cat food produced at a Mars Petcare US plant in Everson, Pa., including Pedigree and Special Kitty as the source.

Pet treats have also been recalled many times for Salmonella, and can make our kids sick.
