Dora's Christmas Carol premieres on Dec. 6 at 8 pm; My favorite holiday activities to do with my grandchildren

To celebrate the premiere of Dora’s Christmas Carol, I am joining Nickelodeon and TwitterMoms to share my favorite holiday activities that I like to do with my grand kids as part of a Dora Christmas Carol contest. Five answers were required, but I didn't know which two to cut.
  1. Decorating for Christmas with my grand kids
  2. Watching my grand kids build a Gingerbread house
  3. Baking cookies and making candy with my grand kids
  4. Taking our grand kids shopping with the change we saved for them to by presents
  5. Watching our grandsons in a Christmas play
  6. Playing Santa for my grand kids
  7. Watching my grand kids open presents on Christmas morning
My granddaughter loves Dora the Explorer. She can't wait to watch Dora’s Christmas Carol premiere on Nickelodeon on December 6 at 8 p.m. EST.

For more information about the movie, visit my Dora widget in my sidebar.

Full Disclosure: I may be chosen as one of five randomly selected bloggers to win a $100 Amex gift card and a Dora Christmas Carol DVD.

The most surprising gift I ever received

Target and TwitterMoms asks, "What is the most surprising gift you ever received?"
My husband doesn't always buy, or even think about presents for every occasion, which makes his recent secret even more of a surprise.

When I was growing up, my family spent a lot of time gathered around the kitchen table piled high with Chesapeake Bay Blue Crabs. We loved those times eating and laughing together.

After I met my husband, who had never eaten whole crabs, I introduced them. He likes crabs, but complains it's too much work for little reward eating whole crabs. He prefers the crab claws instead.

But he wanted me to have new family memories with a new generation, my daughter, son-in-law and grandsons. Unfortunatly, my son and his wife, moved too far away to join us. He wanted me to teach my grandsons how to clean the crabs.

Since we live in N.C., he decided to wait for our anniversary and order several dozen crabs from Maryland. I didn't have a clue. It was a well kept secret. And it was a huge surprise.

I am not good with surprises. I always get embrassed. But I ended up enjoying the crabs and teaching my grandsons how to clean them while we talked and laughed.

We had a wonderful time. And I am so thankful to my husband for such a wonderful gift.

Tips on how to save time and money shopping for the Christmas holidays

With 25 days until Christmas, there's little time left and so much to do. Even though I have been shopping for months, I still am no where near done, so it's time to buckle down.

Here are some tips so we can get our shopping under control.
  • Do not take the kids shopping. It slows you down and everyone gets aggravated so why put yourself through the agony?
  • Shop online today, Cyber Monday, for anything on your list while it's cheaper.
  • Always research items online for the best price, even if you plan to purchase in the store.
  • Beware of buying gift cards. They can lose value. They can also charge service fees.
  • Zhu Zhu pets are hot for the little ones this year, although I haven't figured out why. So if you see them and need them, don't delay the purchase.
  • Netbooks are hot this year. These are cute computers, great for Tweens.
  • Shred Sleds are hot for the older kids
  •  Gifts from the heart are popular - homemade gifts, gifts from the kitchen, are great to give this year with the downturn of the economy.
  • Take pictures to share. Kids grow fast and everyone loves pictures.
panel of moms have already shared their tips. I hope you will check out the Staples holiday widget in my sidebar.

Learn about "Share Tips for Saving Time & Money: You Could Win $100 Staples Gift Card! (Blogging Contest)" on Twittermoms.

I hope you get some useful tips and have a wonderful holiday.

Full Disclosure: I may get one of these prizes for posting this blog. This is my honest opinion.
• The first 50 bloggers to post on this topic, which also include the Staples widget, will get a $25 Staples Gift Card to use at the Staples store.
• Ten randomly selected bloggers will receive a $100 Staples Gift Card to use at the Staples store.

Blog Hop: Making every penny count with coupons when you go shopping

When it comes to saving money, many people use coupons at the the store. Using coupons use to mean cutting them out of the paper each week. Now, we depend on magazines like All You, but we depend more on the Web - blogs, manufacturer sites, credit card sites, and coupon specific sites like:  Coupons.com; CouponCabin.com; CouponMom.com; RetailMeNot.comA Full Cup; redplum; Val-Pak Coupons and SmartSource.com.
Try do do coupon exchanges with other moms if you can. It will make your dollars go further. And shop at stores that doubles your coupons.

Did you know that when you get a rain check for an item that is sold out, you may be able to get your coupon stamped to be used when that item is available, regardless if the coupon expires or not?

It's also a good idea when shopping, to look at items on the shelves above and below eye level. That's where you will find the real bargains. Not where the manufacturers slap you in the face.

Shopping at stores with a deli and bakery in the evening after 7pm gives you a good chance to get the goods at half the price.  Also, search for the sell-by dates and request a discount on those items about to expire within a day or two.

Stores like Walmart will not be under sold. Take their competitor sale papers with you so you can price-match items where you shop. Even stores like Home Depot and Lowes price match. If you're not sure, call and ask your store if they do it. If you really want to save, take online competitor ads with you when you shop and ask for price matching. It never hurts to ask. And in some cases you will be pleasantly surprised.

Some items are best purchased at warehouse stores like Sam's, while other products are best bought at dollar stores. Do the math. After you do the homework, you'll save a lot of money.

Do you have a money-saving tip to share?

CPSC to make massive recall of cribs with dropdown sides, CBS news says

CBS News claims the Consumer Product Safety Commission is about to announce one of the largest crib recalls in United States history, involving cribs with dropdown sides, fearing they may be unsafe, even deadly.

"Early Show" Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen, said now there is a major push to ban those types of cribs. Tyler Jonathan was only 10 months old when he died in the very place his mother, Michele Witte, thought he'd be safe -- his crib, Koeppen says.

"That's every parent's safe-haven for their child, and to see the horrific site of him strangled ... was just horrifying to me," Witte told Koeppen.

Tyler had been sleeping in a crib with a dropdown side, Witte says. Somehow, he was able to get his head stuck in a gap between the side rail and headboard.

"I just fell to my knees and I started screaming," Witte recalls.

The federal government has recalled nearly 5 million cribs in the past two years -- many of them with drop down sides, Koeppen said.

"Parents like the convenience of having the side drop down," CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum said, "The hardware used by many manufacturers to make the sides drop isn't substantial. We have been relying on voluntary standards," for crib safety but, "We find that is no longer enough. We will now be writing. (Or proposing) federal regulations that are mandatory for cribs."

The CPSC isn't alone. Starting in February the legislature in Suffolk County, on New York's Long Island has banned the sale of dropdown side cribs. And Toys 'R us is no longer selling drop side cribs.

Also, a measure just approved by the organization that sets safety guidelines for the crib industry, makes full-size cribs with dropdown sides a violation of voluntary safety standards.

Witte wants a federal ban in place soon.

"We cannot have a crib that takes the lives of ... infants ... out there on the market for unknowing consumers," she remarked.

The CPSC says it has no doubt dangerous and recalled cribs are being used in homes right now in America.

Koeppen says CBS News is waiting to hear more about the crib recall, and the specific cribs involved, and expects to have more on the recall on "The Early Show" on Tuesday.

Koeppen advises parents who have a crib in their home that has dropdown sides to check to see whether it's already been recalled. The CPSC suggests checking the hardware to see if it seems solid. Feel the side rail. If you can move it back and forth, that can be dangerous. And stop using the side rail. Don't put it up and down anymore.

Movie plot:

Sometimes it takes a stranger to see what’s really going on in a family.

“This is no place for a dog. They are just a distraction.” George McCray said it so often his friends were amazed to learn that a stray had been “invited” to spend the holidays with George, his wife Mary Ann and their son Todd on their Kansas farm. And no one was more surprised than George himself, that a dog would lead him on a journey of self-discovery.

When Todd, a developmentally-challenged 20 year-old with an affinity for animals, hears that the animal shelter is looking for families to foster a dog for Christmas, he’s eager to sign up. But George says “no adoptions” – even temporary ones – claiming he wants to protect Todd from disappointment. Mary Ann knows better. Something else is troubling her husband – something he doesn’t want to face.

With Mary Ann’s support, Todd’s persistence pays off. He chooses a friendly yellow lab and names him “Christmas”. But when Todd chooses “Christmas” at the shelter, he is concerned about all the dogs left to spend the holidays in cages. Todd sets out to get the whole community involved.

What begins as a small act of kindness becomes a valuable lesson for Todd’s parents – and the entire town – in the potential of one person to make a difference.

Bringing Christmas home is a revelation for George. The dog seems to know immediately that this is where he belongs. Watching Todd and Christmas together, George sees his son in a new light. And it soon becomes obvious that Christmas has actually “adopted” George, creating a bond that is stronger than past disappointments.

"Dog Named Christmas", is a joyful movie that is destined to become a holiday tradition.

You can give a lonely pet the gift of love and affection this Christmas, too. Learn more about fostering a homeless pet for the holidays.
