Helping low-income working families keep their homes: Modest Needs Foundation and Groupon announce new campaign 10/10

Your $10 donation can help prevent, restore,

empower, and strengthen a 'working poor' family

People are hurting. Many Americans trying to survive this economic recession work hard to stay above water. You've play by the rules. You live within your means. But, every time you think it's going to get better, the rug is pulled out from under you again.

You can prevent homelessness; You might be next

  • After a temporary layoff, you return to work to come home and find an eviction with 10 days notice, and your first check is two weeks away;
  • Your child needs an emergency operation, and your insurance deductible is $1,500 that you don't have;
  • An unexpected illness makes you to choose buying food for your family instead of the medicine you need because you can't afford both;
  • Your car – which is your only transportation to work – needs hundreds of dollars in repairs;

You have to choose between an emergency expense, and other bills such as rent or a mortgage payment. Then you get behind on more bills, or don't take care of the emergency situation. You don't qualify for government aid, because you have been self-sufficient. You get to the point of losing your home and enter the poverty.

These are a few of the many things that can upset the balance of the daily of hard-working, low-income Americans. A group that is often ignored, under served, and continually dances on the razor’s edge of homelessness and poverty.

According to the Modest Needs Foundation, a self-sufficiency grant of $750 will prevent a working individual – who typically does not qualify for any form of government aid or philanthropy – from becoming homeless. In 2011, the non-profit brought 1,554 working low-income families, and nearly 7,000 individuals back from the brink of poverty and homelessness.

Recipients aren't the only ones empowered, donors are too. Modest Needs is launching an innovative new program that proves there is strength in numbers. Through Oct. 10, the non-profit debuts a national GROUPON Grassroots Campaign to benefit low-income families and individuals. Subscribers can visit the Groupon Grassroots link to make a pledge.

If 75 GROUPON customers donate $10, a tax-deductible contribution, each Organization Voucher issued will provide support toward two grants to help a low-income household pay their rent or a mortgage. With the help of a matching grant up to $90,000 from the Herb Alpert Foundation, every additional $750 will provide  two additional grants to a struggling, low-income household.

Congratulations to Dr. Taylor, Founder of Modest Needs. He has been nominated for the Rare Life Honor Award. If his story gets enough votes, Modest Needs may receive up $30,000 that could go toward helping more applicants. VOTE Now.

Apply for a grant if you need help.
