Straight Talk Wireless to 'Dial Up' $1 million to make children's wishes come true

One Minute. One Million.

I can't imagine as a parent and a grandparent, getting the news that one of my children or grandkids have cancer. It's something I pray I never have to face.

But, I feel for all those parents, grandparents, and kids that do have to face it. And, now we can do something to help. It takes a minute, and won't cost us anything.

Make-A-Wish® and Straight Talk® Wireless are joining forces for a massive charitable donation push at Walmart stores nationwide beginning Sept. 22.

Make-A-Wish, the nation’s premier wish-granting organization for children, and Straight Talk Wireless, a brand of TracFone Wireless, Inc., America’s number one no-contract cell phone provider, are undertaking an unprecedented push to raise $1 million for Make-A-Wish at 3,000 Walmart stores nationwide.

The charitable endeavor is the first of its kind for Straight Talk Wireless, and a unique undertaking for the no-contract wireless industry.

From its humble beginnings inspired by one boy’s wish to be a police officer, Make-A-Wish has evolved into an organization that has granted nearly a quarter of a million wishes for children in the U.S. – at the rate of one every 38 minutes. More than 76 percent of each dollar raised by the Make-A-Wish goes directly toward granting wishes.

“Straight Talk Wireless offers cell phone users contract-free unlimited everything service on the nation’s four leading wireless networks for just $45 a month," F. J. Pollak, president and CEO, of TracFone Wireless Inc., the parent company of Straight Talk Wireless, said in a press release. "With Straight Talk, you can get the same phones, same networks, for half the cost. Today, Straight Talk Wireless is helping our customers 'feel richer' in a different way by giving them an opportunity to enrich their communities, and the lives of the families and children in them."

The event will take place during four consecutive Saturdays beginning Sept. 22, at more than 3,000 participating Walmarts, under the banner “One Minute One Million.”  For every shopper who takes part in a brief demonstration of a Straight Talk Wireless Android smartphone, Straight Talk will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, with the funds helping grant wishes in communities nationwide.  Volunteers from local Make-A-Wish chapters will also be on-site at many locations.

The "One Minute. One Million." effort provides a unique way for consumers to ‘feel richer’ and help grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“In aligning with Make-A-Wish, Straight Talk Wireless is helping us reach more kids with life-threatening medical conditions and grant their one true wish,"  said David A. Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. "A wish is more than just a nice thing, and its impact extends further than a just a moment in time. A wish come true can help kids feel stronger, more energetic, and better emotionally and even physically.”

Make-A-Wish® grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true can have positive impacts on the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illnesses, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family.

Based in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish is one of the world’s leading children’s charities, serving children in every community in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, Make-A-Wish grants a wish somewhere in the country every 38 minutes. It has granted more than 212,000 wishes since its inception in 1980; nearly 14,000 in 2011 alone. Visit Make-A-Wish at wish.org and discover how you can share the power of a wish®.
