Michaels PIN pad machines compromised, some customer accounts may have been violated

If you've shopped at Michaels Stores and used the PIN pad recently, you better keep an eye on your account. Michaels said machines inside its stores were compromised, and some customer accounts may have been violated.

Michaels Stores, Inc. was first notified that PIN pad tampering occurred in its Chicago-area stores, and customer credit and debit card information may have been compromised. The company was contacted this week by banking and law enforcement authorities after some fraudulent debit card transactions were reported during the weekend. Authorities said the fraudulent transactions may be linked to legitimate transactions in Chicago-area Michaels stores.

After a preliminary screening of PIN pads in all US Michaels Stores, Michaels confirms some PIN pads in selected stores have been tampered with in addition to Chicago-area stores. A published list of stores where tampered PIN pads have been detected are listed at the end of this post.

Suspicious PIN pads were disabled.  Michaels has removed approximately 7,200 PIN pads comparable to the tampered PIN pads from all of its US stores as a precaution.

Michaels is replacing the PIN pads. Until then, customers transactions may be processed on the store register.

Consumers should monitor their statements, report suspicious account activity, and change PIN numbers and other account security settings. If  you believe your account was used without authorization you should contact the card issuer directly.
