Get a free West Va. calendar

Order a free 2011 West Va. Roadsides in Bloom Calendar. I order these every year and they are full of beautiful wildflowers.

In early 2006, Anna Shahan, who operates Operation Wildflower in West Virginia shared this beautiful photo with American Meadows. Anna has overseen the West Virginia’s highway wildflower planting program for years, and that’s why whenever you drive through West Va., the roadside wildflowers are so beautiful. West Virginia’s roadside wildflower program is one of the most successful in the country.

Contest for Calendar Photos: In 2006, Anna staged a photography contest for a calendar called “Roadsides in Bloom.” The entries could be photos of either natural bloom along the roads, or of some of the state’s planted wildflowers. One of the entries was a great planting of Red Poppies, Papaver rhoeas, that was planted by Anna’s crews with seeds from American Meadows. The seed company thanked the West Virginian who took the picture and entered it, and pulled for it's red poppies to be one of the contest winners that would go into the calendar. I have seen pictures like this in the calendar every year.

The state's Operation Wildflower beautification program is a joint effort between the Dept. of Environmental Protection and the state's Division of Highways. It includes more than 250 acres of wildflowers grown on West Virginia's roadways.
