10-year-old Zahra Baker declared dead; Please come light a candle for her

Zahra Baler (from My Space)

Hickory, N.C. Police Chief Tom Adkins said he found enough evidence, including her prosthetic leg, DNA on a bone in Caldwell Co., that matches DNA from Zahra's home, and partial remains found in Caldwell Co., "that are consistent with that of a child", to declare Zahra won't be coming home.

"We've recovered enough physical evidence to believe we have found Zahra," Chief Adkins said in an emotional voice.

Chief Adkins said DNA swabs were taken from Zahra's biological mother and father and all evidence has been sent to labs for further testing. He said this case is ongoing.

"This case isn't over and we won't rest until we have all the information we need to bring the people to justice who hurt Zahra," Adkins said.

Zahra would have been 11 on Tuesday.  A shrine can be seen at her home on 21st Avenue Northwest in Hickory. People are leaving letters, balloons, stuffed animals and pictures. Her real mother wept as she visited the location.

"Our community mourns, our state mourns, our nation mourns," Adkins said.

Pray for Zahra. Light a candle for her. May she rest in peace.
